Maar alles wat je nu ziet, is niet altijd zo geweest. Die terrassen, die muziek, dat gefeest. Al dat mooi, dat is iets van de laatste decennia.<\/p>\n<p>Vroeger, way back, was het hier een klooster. Jaren 1400. Kennen jullie deze nog? Nonnen, bidden, stilte. Dat soort werk. Ik denk niet dat ze hadden kunnen bevroeden dat hun gebedsplaats honderden jaren later een plek zou worden waar je &#8216;s avonds je laatste centen over de balk zou smijten en op de tafels zou staan dansen.<\/p>\n<p>Na die nonnen kwam de handel. Groenten, fruit, vis, noem maar op. Het was \u00e9\u00e9n groot kermis van karren en mensen die elkaar de huid vol scholden voor een paar rotte appels. Dat boterhuis (Boterwaag), dat staat er nog. Nog steeds een prachtig monumentale herinnering aan de tijd dat de Grote Markt enkel nog een markt was.<\/p>\n<p>Toen, rond 1938, dacht men: &#8220;Wat als we die hele handel nou zouden verplaatsen?&#8221; En ze gooide de hele markt naar de Herman Costerstraat. De plek waar &#8216;ie nu nog steeds zit. Goed om te weten, want dat geeft aan dat Den Haag echt is veranderd. De Grote Marktstraat werd aangelegd. Een soort van snelweg voor winkelend publiek. En weg was die oude sfeer.<\/p>\n<p>En nu? Nu is het een uitgaansgebied. Vrij van auto&#8217;s, vol met mensen. Livemuziek, festivals, Haagse Harry die je vanaf zijn sokkel de middelvinger geeft. Het is de plek geworden waar je je kan laten gaan, waar je kan dansen en waar je &#8216;s nachts de stad hoort ademen. De oude geschiedenis is er nog wel, maar dan als een soort van stille observator.
